Al menos 227 personas murieron a causa del terremoto de magnitud 7,2 que afectó este sábado Haití, de acuerdo con un nuevo balance de Protección Civil, que da cuenta de ‘cientos de heridos y desaparecidos’.

Del total de muertes, 158 se produjeron en el sur, según el reporte de Protección Civil.

El primer ministro de Haití, Ariel Henry, declaró el estado de emergencia como consecuencia del terremoto que afectó al empobrecido país este sábado y que ha dejado muertos y cuantiosos daños materiales.

“El Gobierno ha decidido esta mañana declarar el estado de emergencia durante un mes tras esta catástrofe”, dijo en conferencia de prensa Henry, quien asumió el cargo el pasado 20 de julio, 13 días después del asesinato del presidente del país, Jovenel Moise, a cargo, según las pesquisas, de un comando de 26 mercenarios que irrumpieron en su residencia privada de Puerto Príncipe.

El terremoto, que también se sintió en la República Dominicana y Cuba, se registró a las 08.29 hora local (12.29 GMT), a unos 12 kilómetros de la localidad de Saint-Louis du Sud, con un epicentro de 10 kilómetros de profundidad, y a este le siguió una réplica de magnitud 5,2 a 17 kilómetros de la localidad de Chantal, también con un epicentro de 10 kilómetros de profundidad.
