El aceite de coco virgen ayuda a destruir el virus de la covid-19 por lo que puede ser útil como antiviral contra la enfermedad provocada por el nuevo coronavirus, según los primeros experimentos de una investigación desarrollada en Filipinas.

El Consejo Filipino para la Investigación y el Desarrollo de la Salud (PCHRD, en inglés) estudió los efectos del aceite de coco frente a la covid-19 durante meses en fase experimental y ya ha comenzado los ensayos clínicos con 56 pacientes

Los resultados son muy prometedores, ya que no solo muestran que el aceite de coco, por sí mismo, puede destruir el virus, sino que también puede ser un mecanismo clave para regular al alza la respuesta inmune contra la covid-19′, indicó en un comunicado Jaime Montoya, director del PCHRD

Según una investigación financiada por el Departamento de Ciencia y Tecnología de Filipinas, los compuestos del aceite de coco virgen disminuyen entre un 60% y un 90% la carga vírica de la covid-19, además de reforzar la supervivencia celular, lo que implica que contribuye a reforzar la respuesta del sistema inmune.

Sin embargo, el PCHRD advirtió de que se necesitan más experimentos para determinar si una mayor concentración de compuestos de aceite de coco puede reducir aún más la tasa de replicación del virus que causa la enfermedad respiratoria de la covid-19.

El secretario filipino de Ciencia, Fortunato de la Peña, indicó hoy en una entrevista con una radio local que el primer análisis del aceite de coco virgen como posible agente antiviral podría estar disponible para la segunda semana de noviembre.

Sobre los ensayos clínicos con 56 pacientes en el Hospital de Laguna, De la Peña aclaró que se han logrado buenos resultados, pero que se trataba de pacientes con síntomas leves de la covid-19.

Por ello, el Hospital General de Filipinas inició este mes un ensayo clínico paralelo para probar los efectos del uso de aceite de coco entre pacientes de la covid-19 con un cuadro más grave.

Filipinas ha sido desbancada por Indonesia como el país del Sudeste Asiático con más contagios de la covid-19, con 356.618 infecciones -39.800 son todavía casos activos- y 6.652 muertes. EFE
