La mañana que Juancito me censuró  de manera amable un comportamiento que no he podido superar, yo estaba   en el Mercado de los Mina llamando comerciantes y tratando de cumplir el millón de pesos que me había propuesto como meta de ese mes.

La grandes comerciantes del mercado y los pequeños mercaderes habían dado su apoyo total a las renovaciones de contratos y pagos  de su mensualidad. Los empleados estaban motivados detrás de esa meta y era tanta la concentración que no había visto 16 llamadas perdidas de un número que no conocía.

El teléfono de la oficina sonó y la secretaria me dijo –Peralta es del despacho del alcalde que conteste la flota.

Tomé el celular y del otro lado una voz me  dijo – señor presidente usted no le responde la llamada al síndico. Sentí un poco de vergüenza y quise explicarle que no me había dado cuenta y en tono jocoso me respondió –No es la primera vez que pasa con usted, nunca había visto un hombre más difícil que usted para comunicarme, lo estoy llamando para invitarlo a un almuerzo mañana en mi oficina.

De camino a la oficina  del alcalde recordé la primera vez que conocí personalmente a Juan de los Santos. Fue   una noche de marzo del  año 2005  en una visita que hizo a mi casa y en los primeros 30 segundos me convencí que el próximo año sería  el síndico de Santo Domingo Este   .

En aquel almuerzo comprendí que era un ser humano humilde, con gran sensibilidad humana, inteligente   y sobre todo un gran conocedor de todo aquel que come con sal.

Llegó a la alcaldía siendo prácticamente un novato en comparación con quienes tenían decenas de años en el partido y a pesar del recelo de los dirigentes pudo convertirse rápidamente en el líder del PLD  de Santo Domingo Este.

Supo tener a todos los diputados a su favor, su gran  gestión como alcalde fue validada en el 2010 con una reelección.

Su legado como político y como alcalde es incuestionable

En su alcaldía Santo Domingo Este, quedaba año por año en primer lugar del  Simap Municipal gracias a una excelente coordinación entre la Secretaría General, las Secretaría Técnica y la Dirección Financiera que daba de manera oportuna las informaciones de buenas prácticas municipales.

Juancito logró acuerdos    interinstitucionales con los más importantes ministerios y por esa vía creo la ruta turística de Santo Domingo Este, así mismo junto al diputado Manuel Jiménez y varios regidores encabezados por Daneris Santana rescataron el Cachon la Rubia.

Cuando Danilo llegó al poder mostraba intenciones de ser muy diferente a Leonel y Juancito convenció al presidente Medina de extender el Metro a Santo Domingo Este.

Lleno el municipio de bellos parques, desde ante de ser alcalde se preocupaba de que el 6 de enero de cada año, hasta el   niño más humilde de Santo Domingo Este tuviera, aunque sea ese día de felicidad.

A pesar de ser un hombre sumamente disciplinado que se ejercitaba y trabajaba más de 10 horas diarias, tenía tiempo para sus hijos, esposa el deporte y la política.

A principio del 2015 decidí no apoyarlo más para la alcaldía de Santo Domingo y escribí en Ciudad Oriental que SDE le quedaba pequeño Juan de los Santo y que debía prepararse para subir un peldaño en el 2016.

Desgraciadamente el 15 de diciembre del 2015 no pude comer, porque justo cuando iba entrarme la primera cucharada de arroz, escuché una noticia que me hizo llorar como si perdiera un familiar muy cercano y confieso que cada 15 de diciembre no puedo evitar sentir una honda tristeza por la partida de un grande llamado Juan de los Santos.
