A pesar de mi insignificante experiencia como conductor, logré esquivar la vaca que se me atravesó, pero no pude evitar que el auto impactara en el cuerpo del hombre que caminaba junto a un chico en el paseo izquierdo de la carretera.

Nervioso me detuve a socorrer al hombre que había atropellado, luego me acordé que no tenía licencia   y el temor de caer preso, fue más fuerte que mi responsabilidad ciudadana. El niño que andaba con el hombre gritaba y me imploraba que auxiliara al señor.

Cuando casi me iba, una frase desesperada del chaval hizo que me devolviera. –Yo sé quién eres tú, eres del grupo que llegó ayer al pueblo y te llama Rogers. El impacto en el cuerpo del infante fue brutal, ni siquiera se escuchó el mínimo grito, la sorpresa lo dejó paralizado, fue una muerte rápida. Yo era el único que en ese viaje no tenía parientes.

La mañana de ese tercer viernes de marzo del año 1989 trascurría con lentitud y el camino hacia el manantial parecía no tener fin.

La suerte cambio cuando llegamos al balneario de las Barias, un autobús lleno estudiantes de La Isabela hizo una parada en ese lugar, entre los estudiantes habían hermosas chicas entre 17 y 21 años.

Mi emoción se elevó cuando noté que  4 muchachas   se acercarban al vehículo, pero mi alegría se pasmó al recordar que alguien de mi grupo estaría sobrando, ya que andábamos cinco hombres. En fracción de segundo hice un inventario de cada uno de nosotros

Fernando Jiménez de 22 años era un universitario de clase media alta que había ganado premios de fisiculturismo. Michael Jiménez de 18 años, hijo único de familia acomodada era conocido por ser un imán que atraía las chicas.

Yo era el de  más bajo de estatura, el de más edad del grupo, el único que no sabía bailar y en  mi 23 de años de vida no había besado una mujer.

JR  y Michael no se interesaron en conquistar chicas y se dedicaron  a observar el lugar, en menos de media hora Fernando le había robado el corazón a una joven  de 19 años llamada Marcia G, al terminar la gira W logró en el ultimo un beso de la bella Isolina G, quien tan solo tenía 17 años.

Las otras dos señoritas ni siquiera me miraron, pero a pesar de todo, me sentí bien con la frase de despedida que me dio Marcia G al darme un beso en la mejilla.

Con esa premonición, 7 días después empacamos hacia la Isabela para pasar la Semana Santa.

JR rentó un vehículo y le cedió la Jeepeta a su hermano W para que impresionara a la novia.

El primer día, Marcia G me presentó par de doncellas, pero desde que me vieron  de cerca desaparecieron. Su hermana Isolina   me buscó una amiguita, pero la joven se enamoró de Michael.

El Viernes Santos en la noche me quedé observando desde una ventana a Marcia G cuando hacia el amor en el callejón izquierdo con Fernando.  Los ojos de ella chocaron con los míos y sentí una mezcla de lujuria y vergüenza.

En la noche todos fuimos  a ver el show de un mago en un local retirado del pueblo y Marcia G fingió dolores de cabeza para quedarse  en la casa y para rematar le dijo a Fernando que tenía la cosa que le da mensual a las mujeres.

Ante de marcharnos me grito -una amiga te mando un mandado. Le pregunte

-¿Quién? Y me respondió –Ja ja ja no puedo voceártelo, porque ella es tímida.

Me acerque y me dijo al oído –Escápate del show y ven para que haga conmigo lo que me viste haciendo anoche.

En medio del show le pedí la llave del carro a JR, conducía feliz, hasta que esa vaca se interpuso en el camino y choqué a ese pobre hombre, pero aun con esos dos muertos en mi record, tenía tiempo de llegar a la casa y consumar mi noviazgo con Marcia G.

Cuando llegue a la casa ubicada en la calle Cristóbal Colon numero ¿?  Observe a Marcia G  en la ventana que me hacía seña que vaya al callejón, pero en ese momento noté que el vehiculó estaba abollado en el frente, la capota y además tenía sangré en el bonete. Disimuladamente  intenté limpiar   con mi pañuelo parte del líquido rojo que delataba i crimen.  Sin importarme la consecuencia fui al encuentro de mi amada, ella me recibió con un beso suave y corto, luego con otro más largo e intenso.

El ruido de la jeepeta y la  voz de JR  interrumpieron lo que podía ser el momento más apasionado de esa Semana Santa. Ella con voz suave me dijo –Será otro día, ya llegaron.

Furibundo entre al baño y maldije mil veces a mis amigos por llegar tan rápido. Me fui a la cama contrariado por mi   mala suerte.

Los gritos de Marcia, Isolina y su madre me despertaron.  Tres monjas ebrias encontraron en la carretera los cadáveres del padre y el hermanito menor de Marcia e Isolina. Al principio creyeron que eran  visiones  producidas por el  vino que le habian robado al padre Tobía, pero varios minutos despues un campesino le confirmó la identidad de los cadaveres.

Desde que llegamos a la Isabela, el padre de las anfitrionas y el hermanito menor de las hermana G,  dormían donde la otra mujer de don Vicente para hacernos espacio en la casa y darnos las mejores camas.

Sin cepillar corrí   a ver el auto y para mi sorpresa estaba totalmente limpio. JR  se me acercó y me dijo -quítate ese pantalón y escóndelo que tiene el bolsillo sucio de sangre, no  te preocupes por el carro que lo lavé temprano junto con la Jeepeta.

En ese momento se acercó una señora con cara de chismosa a preguntarnos como habían muerto don Vicente y el niño. Sin ruborizarme le respondí – Dicen que un camión platanero de Mao los atropelló.

Dos horas después, el pueblo completo estaba convencido de que un camión había matado a don Vicente y su hijo, incluso algunos aseguraron que dos haitianos vieron cuando el camión le quitó la vida  a los seres más queridos de Marcia G.

A la salida del cementerio W abrazó a su novia Isolina y le dijo que ya regresaba a la capital, ella en medio  del dolor le pidió que se quedara un día más, pero él le dijo que  no podía quedarse, porque en la mañana debía llevar a su hermano al aeropuerto.

Fernando se montó en el vehículo sin despedirse de Marcia G, le apenaba demasiado el dolor de su novia.

Sin decir adios, me monté en el asiento trasero del carro que había matado a dos buenas personas.

En el primer pueblo baje del vehiculo y le dije a mis compañeros que regresaría a la capital en un bus del transporte inter urbano, los compañeros quisieron preguntarme, pero JR dijo déjenlo que él tiene familia cerca. JR nunca le dijo que yo fui el culpable de esas dos muertes. Él pensó que yo regresaría en transporte público  para olvidar el accidente.

En realidad, me quedé en el pueblo para devolverme a la Isabela y despedirme de Marcia G.

Marcia G no se sorprendió al verme, sabía que no me iría sin darle un abrazo  de despedida.

Al contacto con su pecho sentí una mezcla de dolor y sensualidad, en medio del llanto me dijo al oído que tenía deseo de hacer el amor, pero necesitaba saber quién mató a su padre y su hermano.

Ella me calló la boca con un besos y luego  me dijo -¡tráeme una papita o algo ligero que tengo hambre!

Después de degustar  junto a ella la  papita con soda, me quedé dormido en su cama, en la madrugada  se desnudó por completo,  fue la noche más erótica de mi vida, pasaron muchas cosas, tantas que de recordarla mi sangre corre por mis arterias como río desbordado, sin embargo   su virginidad quedó  intacta. A la 6 de la mañana me dijo -vete para que mi madre no se muera sí te encuentra aquí. Cuando volvamos a vernos seré completamente tuya y júrame que averiguará quien mató a mi hermano. Con lágrimas en los ojos le dije, -No te prometo que lo averiguaré en una semana o un mes, pero sí te juro por Dios que algún día  sabrá quién mató a tu hermano y padre.

-No volveré aquí sin el nombre del asesino.

Hoy es 27 de marzo del 2021 soy alcalde de un distrito municipal más grande que muchos municipios, hoy   que se cumplen 32 años de aquel doble juramento, estoy saliendo  del cementerio donde enterramos a mi amigo JR, quien se envenenó anoche.

JR  me llamó hace 3 días para informarme de manera amistosa que sí no le busco su dinero que me prestó en la campaña electoral me arrancaría la cabeza de 20 plomazos. Le prometí pagarle en una semana todo su dinero y además le ofrecí una obra municipal y convertirlo en principal suplidor del cabildo.

Ayer cenó en mi casa y luego de hartarse de vino, comenzó a sentir mareo, nausea, dolor abdominal y sensación de parálisis circulatorio. Me imploró que le llamara el 911 y que me iba a perdonar todas las deudas, pero yo no me acordaba que número de teléfono  debía marcar ´para  llamar al 911.

El fiscal del caso pensó que pudo ser asesinato, pero la hermana y el hermano de JR declararon que él estaba depresivo y que había comentado su interés por quitarse la vida.

En el velorio la hermana me dijo al oído –Gracias Rogers, por siempre estaré agradecida de ti. Su hermano W Costilla me  abrazó con los ojos húmedos y  expresó su gratitud  al condonarme la deuda. –Olvídate del compromiso que tenía con mi hermano y cuando necesite algo, cuenta conmigo.

Hoy voy camino a la Isabela, la carretera esta mojada, tal vez ellas estén muertas, posibblemente  una esté viva, quizá estén en otro país, pero sí veo alguna de ellas, honraré mi  doble promesa  como cualquier político de mi estatura moral, le diré el nombre del verdadero asesino de su padre y hermano.

Le diré que el difunto JR Costilla fue quien mató a su padre y asesinó a su hermano. Aunque nunca le explicaré que su culpabilidad se fundamentó en darle la llave de un vehículo a un tonto enamorado, que no sabía conducir ni una bicicleta.
