No pienso escribir sobre su calidad humana ni sobre su hazaña de romper el récord de hits como bateador emergente en las grandes ligas. No es el momento para referirme a que es el mejor bateador de la liga dominicana en toda su historia, con un promedio de .333 de por vida y tres lideratos de bateo.
A los siete años, tenía problemas para leer oraciones completas y, para colmo, no deseaba ir a la escuela por temor a dos niños nietos de la directora que me golpeaban. Me sentía decepcionado y soñaba con crecer para no tener que ir a la escuela. En mi rebeldía interna, no hacía los deberes de la clase y quería destacarme como el peor estudiante.
Mis únicos momentos felices eran cuando visitaba a mi abuelo y me narraba anécdotas sobre Alonso Perry, el lanzador zurdo Guayubín Olivo y otras luminarias del glorioso equipo del Licey, y sobre Manuel Mota, que aún estaba activo.
Aquel martes de diciembre, los nietos de la directora me golpearon, y justo cuando intentaba defenderme, la profesora Juana me sorprendió intentando devolverle el golpe a uno de ellos, llamado Mateo, hijo del profesor Felipe García, y sin mediar palabra, me pegó con una enorme regla de madera. Me hizo extender la mano para darme cinco reglazos en cada mano, pero terminé recibiendo once por si acaso había contado mal. Luego me llevó a la dirección, donde me pusieron de rodillas por el resto de la mañana.
A la hora de salida, mandaron conmigo una extensa carta a mi padre explicando mi comportamiento antisocial y agresivo. Mi papá me dio dos palizas con un cinturón de piel de culebra, una de ellas por mi comportamiento violento en la escuela y la otra por llegar con los ojos morados de los golpes que probaban que había perdido la pelea. A mi papá le disgustaba que yo peleara, pero en caso de hacerlo, no toleraba que yo perdiera el pleito.
Esa tarde quedé castigado y me sentía decepcionado, pensando que había nacido en un mundo equivocado lleno de sufrimiento. Hasta que en la noche, mi padre encendió la radio para escuchar el juego del Licey y Escogido. En ese momento, quería ser fanático del Escogido para ser contrario a mi padre, que era seguidor del Licey. Pero recordé las anécdotas de mi abuelo y pregunté de qué equipo era Manuel Mota, y la respuesta me hizo cambiar de equipo.
Lamentablemente, Manuel Mota tenía 14 días que se había lesionados y no pudo jugar ese día. Los Leones del Escogido comenzaron ganando, lo que aumentó aún más mi depresión y mi deseo de irme de esta vida.
En el noveno inning, el Escogido ganaba 4 carreras a 2 y cuando retiraron a los dos primeros bateadores del Licey, mi padre apagó el radio, porque no tenía valor de escuchar un final de juego donde perdiera el Licey.
Decepcionado de la vida, abrí la gaveta donde mi madre guardaba el veneno para ratas y me arropé de pies a cabeza con un vaso de agua en una mano y en la otra el veneno. Pero cuando me disponía a tomarlo, escuché levemente desde el pequeño radio de pila de mi hermano mayor que un pelotero americano del Licey había dado un cuadrangular, aunque el Escogido seguía ganando 4 carreras a 3 con dos outs.
Me quedé paralizado y decidí morir cuando se acabara el juego. El siguiente bateador del Licey llegó a la inicial por base por bola, luego el otro dio un rodado fácil por tercera base, pero el tiro a la primera fue malo y los corredores quedaron en segunda y tercera base.
Al siguiente bateador le dieron base por bola intencional y con las bases llenas le tocaba batear al pelotero de menos promedio del torneo. En ese momento, supe que solo estaba aumentando mi agonía y, sin perder tiempo, me puse el veneno en la boca. Pero algo por dentro me dijo que escuchara lo que iba a decir el comentarista del juego, Tomás Troncoso.
Con su voz de hombre sabio, dijo que debían traer a Manuel Mota de emergente, que aunque estaba lesionado ese día, estaba en el roster. Al parecer, el dirigente del Licey escuchó al comentarista.
Cuando Mota se paró a batear, ya yo había escupido el veneno en el sanitario, y como estaba seguro de que Mota iba a dar un hit, había jurado que jamás atentaría contra mi vida y sería el mejor estudiante. Pero el narrador dijo algo que renovó mi angustia: «Amigos fanáticos, Mota no le ha puesto las manos a un bate en dos semanas, hoy no está en condiciones de batearle ni a mi abuelita, y acaba de entrar el relevista estelar de los Leones del Escogido apodado el come hombre.»
Al primer lanzamiento, Manuel Mota colocó una línea suave que tocó la grama del estadio entre el jardín central y el derecho, dejando en el terreno al Escogido. Con gran euforia grité, «¡Licey Campeón!»
Meses después, en una reunión de padres de la escuela, la directora expresó que yo era el estudiante más aplicado y disciplinado. Esa misma noche, el Licey ganaba la Serie del Caribe y cuando anunciaron al líder de bateo, que al mismo tiempo fue jugador más destacado y dirigente más valioso de la Serie del Caribe , no esperé a que mencionaran el dije. Eso se lo ganó de manera unánime Manuel Mota, el pelotero que una noche salvó mi vida.
