Esa lluviosa mañana de aquel  29 de octubre, me encontraba desempleado, pero lleno de alegría compartiendo tiempo con mis dos hijas. Mientras hablaba con Nicole, de seis años, sobre el próximo cumpleaños de su hermanita Linette, quien celebraría tres años en aproximadamente 20 días, ella me lanzó una pregunta intrigante: «¿Y cuánto falta para el mío?»

Le contesté: «Faltan unos 100 días y 8 horas.» Nicole me miró con ojos entristecidos; una niña de seis años con la capacidad de leer textos extensos y, casi llorando, me planteó una cuestión desconcertante: «Papi, ¿en qué momento se inventó el día y a qué hora se inventó la hora?»

Su pregunta me tomó por sorpresa, y le respondí con cautela: «Solo podré darte una respuesta cuando alcances los 18 años.»

Pasaron 37 meses desde ese momento. Mis hijas, que ya no vivían conmigo, decidieron pasar la Semana Santa a mi lado. Mientras veíamos películas relacionadas con el Antiguo Testamento de la Biblia, como el Diluvio y la historia de Sodoma y Gomorra, Linette, con sus seis años de sabiduría infantil, lanzó otra pregunta inquietante: «Papi, ¿por qué Dios, en lugar de destruir a toda esa gente con un diluvio, no eliminó a Satanás, que es el culpable de su maldad?»

Esta pregunta sorprendente me dejó sin palabras, y le respondí con humildad: «Tal vez, incluso en cien años, no podría responder a esa incógnita. Los misterios de Dios son tan profundos que a veces nos resulta imposible comprenderlos.»

En medio de la madrugada, una voz susurrante y persistente rompió mi sueño: «Papi, Papi, despierta.»

Era Linette, incapaz de dormir debido a una inquietud que la atormentaba y la mantenía despierta. La miré con una expresión interrogante y, con la determinación de un Sherlock Holmes en miniatura, me lanzó una última pregunta antes de desaparecer en la penumbra de la noche: «¿Y si Satanás es el hijo mayor de Dios y por eso Él se niega a destruirlo, a pesar de su maldad?»

Hoy, en la era de la comunicación instantánea, ambas mis hijas me sorprendieron conectando mentalmente, formulando simultáneamente una pregunta: «Papi, ¿cuándo responderás las preguntas que te hicimos cuando éramos niñas?»

Cerré la llamada en silencio y, lleno de reflexiones, me sumergí en la escritura de esta historia. Ahora, anhelo que algún lector tenga la respuesta que no pude darles a mis hijas.
