Levantan la alerta de tsunami tras el terremoto en Haití

La Administración Nacional de Océanos y Atmósfera de EE.UU. (NOAA, en inglés) levantó este sábado la alerta de tsunami que había emitido con relación al terremoto de magnitud 7,2 en el sur de Haití, al determinar que ha pasado la amenaza de que se produzca ese fenómeno.

«Según todos los datos disponibles, la amenaza de tsunami por este terremoto ha pasado y ya no hay amenaza», señaló la NOAA en su último boletín sobre el sismo.

Una hora antes, la NOAA, que vigila la emergencia de posibles tsunamis en todo el mundo, había avisado de la posibilidad de que se produjeran olas gigantescas de entre «1 o 3 metros sobre el nivel de la marea» en algunas costas de Haití.

La agencia había calculado que dicho tsunami podría alcanzar las costas de Puerto Príncipe, las de la ciudad sureña de Jacmel y las de Jérémie (suroeste).

Sin embargo, no tardó en retirar ese aviso y pidió simplemente mantener la vigilancia por si se produjeran «fluctuaciones menores, de hasta 30 centímetros, sobre y bajo la marea normal» en zonas costeras cercanas al epicentro del sismo en las «próximas horas».

El terremoto se registró a las 08.29 hora local (12.29 GMT) al noreste de Saint-Louis du Sud, en el sur de Haití, y tuvo una profundidad de 10 kilómetros, de acuerdo con el Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos (USGS, en inglés).

Esa agencia geológica asignó a este terremoto una alerta roja en su escala de daños humanos, que significa que «es probable que haya un alto número de víctimas y es probable que el desastre afecte a una zona extensa», indicó en su página web.

«En el pasado, otros eventos con este nivel de alerta han requerido una respuesta de nivel nacional o internacional», advirtió.

En enero de 2010, un terremoto de magnitud 7 en Haití dejó 300.000 muertos, igual cantidad de heridos y 1,5 millones de damnificados.

En cuanto al posible impacto económico de este nuevo sismo, el USGS emitió una alerta naranja, que implica que «es probable que haya daños significativos», y que las pérdidas económicas estimadas son de «entre el 0 % y el 3 % del PIB de Haití».
