EL ALCALDE SEMBRÓ JUNTO A NIÑOS DE LA COMUNIDAD LAS PRIMERAS HORTALIZAS DEL SISTEMA DE HUERTOS

El alcalde de Santo Domingo Este, Manuel Jiménez, puso en funcionamiento este fin de semana en Los Frailes el primer huerto de lo que será el sistema municipal de huertos urbanos, dirigido a recuperar, aprovechar y embellecer terrenos baldíos de la ciudad.

El alcalde Manuel Jiménez, niños y niñas de la junta de vecinos infantil Jehová con Nosotros sembraron las primeras semillas y plántulas para producir zanahoria, rábano, espinaca, lechuga rizada, morada y puerro.

Según Jiménez, los huertos urbanos que está preparando el Ayuntamiento sólo producirán alimentos orgánicos, libres de químicos dañinos para la salud. Y se instalarán en solares baldíos y en áreas ociosas, siempre en coordinación con el liderazgo comunitario de la zona.

“Los huertos urbanos es un plan que antes de llegar a la Alcaldía estábamos poniendo en los barrios las muestras de en qué consistía esa maravilla (…) Con esta iniciativa estamos buscando que Santo Domingo Este sea autosuficiente”, resaltó.

Añadió que con la conformación del huerto de Los Frailes se está pasando de un “basurero, monte lleno de maleza y alimañas, a un jardín, a un jardín con frutos. Los niños, aseguró, serán quienes más lo disfruten.

Jiménez explicó que, además, el cabildo instalará en los mercados anaqueles de venta para que la población pueda acceder a los productos orgánicos de los huertos del sistema.

Se espera que en las próximas semanas se abran otros huertos en puntos distintos del municipio.

Por su parte, Ovelis Moreno, encargada del Sistema Municipal de Huerto Urbanos, apuntó que con estos proyectos se busca dar vida a las comunidades y un sistema de seguridad alimentaria.

Asimismo, subrayó que: “Buscamos generar una interacción directa con la comunidad, sobre todo que la comunidad se involucre en ese proceso de producción que también puede darse en cada uno de sus hogares”.

En el acto de inicio de los trabajos de siembra participaron dirigentes comunitarios de la zona; la secretaria general del Ayuntamiento, Jehimy Núñez; el mini alcalde de Los Frailes, Rafael Camacho; el director de Gestión Ambiental, Demetrio Sánchez; y el director de Ingeniería y Obras, Héctor Garibaldi; entre otros funcionarios.
