Los Huertos Urbanos como Puente hacia la Sostenibilidad de las ciudades

En los últimos años, Santo Domingo Este ha emprendido un ambicioso programa de huertos urbanos que está comenzando a dar frutos. La meta de la alcaldía es convertir a esta ciudad en un referente, al nivel de urbes como Medellín, La Habana, Managua, Tegucigalpa, San José, que llevan décadas trabajando en el fomento de la agricultura urbana. Esta iniciativa es una respuesta al constante alejamiento de la vida natural que experimentamos en las grandes metrópolis, lo cual genera trastornos como ansiedad, depresión y estrés.

La vida en las ciudades nos sumerge en un entorno repleto de sonidos, olores, alimentos procesados y situaciones que nos alejan cada vez más del medio natural, para el cual nuestros cuerpos están diseñados. Además de afectarnos a nivel personal, este estilo de vida también perjudica al medio ambiente. La expansión desmedida de áreas urbanizadas, la deforestación de bosques y selvas, y un estilo de vida depredador que genera una cantidad insostenible de residuos, son factores que conforman una tormenta perfecta.

Al principio, me sorprendía la importancia que el alcalde Manuel Jiménez otorgaba a los huertos urbanos en Santo Domingo Este. No comprendía por qué esta alcaldía se empeñaba tanto en convertir este programa en un sello distintivo de la ciudad. Sin embargo, mi perspectiva cambió cuando visité Centroamérica y me di cuenta de que Santo Domingo Este está siguiendo el camino correcto.

En su rendición de cuentas Jiménez destacó el gran trabajo de Ovelis Moreno en los huertos urbanos y además hizo mención del regidor José Ramón Jiménez como promotor de las ideas de huertos urbanos en esta ciudad

Los huertos urbanos ya son una realidad en todas las grandes ciudades del mundo. Son innumerables las iniciativas que han transformado el entorno, restablecido la biodiversidad y mejorado la calidad de vida de los ciudadanos, al tiempo que han demostrado una eficiencia económica notable. El movimiento de agricultura urbana ha acogido con entusiasmo a diferentes grupos de edad, clases sociales y países que han adoptado sistemas de producción de alimentos dentro de las ciudades.

Rafael Loschiavo Miranda, cofundador de Noocity Ecología Urbana, señala algunos beneficios de los huertos urbanos. Estos reducen las islas de calor, ya que el agua presente en las plantas y en la propia tierra de cultivo absorbe el calor, disminuyendo las fluctuaciones de temperatura. Además, mejoran la calidad del aire, ya que las hojas realizan la fotosíntesis durante la noche, liberando oxígeno. Asimismo, las plantas absorben el ruido, a diferencia del cemento, ayudando a crear entornos más silenciosos. Otro beneficio importante es la capacidad de los huertos urbanos para reducir el riesgo de inundaciones, ya que la tierra es capaz de retener el agua de lluvia, aliviando la carga sobre las galerías urbanas debido a la baja permeabilidad del suelo. Además, los huertos contribuyen a disminuir la contaminación en múltiples aspectos, desde la contaminación de tierras y el flujo de tráfico en las autopistas, hasta el desperdicio de alimentos en los mercados.
