El 19 de febrero de 1926 el Congreso Nacional aprobó la Ley 370, la cual dispone que el último domingo de mayo sea celebrado en todo el país el Día de la Madres, la misma fue promulgada por el presidente de la República don Horacio Vásquez.

 

Los principales promotores de esta iniciativa fueron la educadora santiaguera Ercília Pepín y la Primera Dama doña Trina Moya de Vásquez, la cual compuso el himno a las madres; la música de estos versos fue escrita por el sacerdote y músico Manuel de Jesús González.  Tres calles de Los Minas rinden honor a estos ilustres dominicanos.

 

La primera celebración del Día de las Madres se realizo el domingo 30 de mayo de 1926, ese día en el Convento de los Dominicos, con la presencia  del presidente don Horacio Vásquez y todas las autoridades; el sacerdote Manuel de Jesús González dirigió el coro y la orquesta que cantaron por primera vez el Himno a las Madres, el cual había sido escrito por  la poetiza y Primera Dama María de los Ángeles Trinidad de Moya Pérez, mejor conocida como Trina Moya de Vásquez.

 

Desde un principio se  utilizaron  dos  simbolismos, claveles rojos para quienes tenían su madre viva y azucenas para quienes la tenían muerta, se hacían visitas a los cementerios a  rendir tributos las madres fallecidas

 

En las escuelas, se hacían actos liricos, en honor a las madres, estas  recibían como regalo abrazo y besos de sus hijos, bebidas naturales, flores, dulces y almuerzo en familia.

 

No era una fiesta comercial como es hoy, se buscaba fortalecer los lazos familiares, el amor y el respeto a las  madres, la unidad familiar;  en fin sembrar valores.
